Research Partner Trips
In addition to transporting passengers across Frenchman Bay, the Schoodic Ferry also helps local environmental monitoring researchers keep up with the health of Frenchman Bay and its inhabitants. While you can encounter and interact with working scientists and sustainability engineers on any of our trips, some Schoodic Ferry trips include planned stopping time to gather data. Join us on these special trips to meet scientists, ask questions, and see firsthand some of the ground-breaking research going on right here in Frenchman Bay.
While our weekly scientific schedule changes depending on scientist availability and weather forecasts, the Schoodic Ferry is pleased to host international Protected Species Observer Clare Echlin aboard to conduct marine mammal and pelagic bird surveys in June and July. Once Clare arrives, marine mammal surveys will be conducted 5 days/week during our 9:00 am Winter Harbor to Bar Harbor trip and our 10:00 a.m. Bar Harbor to Winter Harbor trip. In addition, Clare will be conducting pelagic bird surveys 5 days/week during our 7:50 a.m. Bar Harbor to Winter Harbor trip and our 11:15 a.m. Winter Harbor trip. Join us for this unique chance to participate in ongoing research.
Acadia Centennial Partner Trips^
Back by popular demand, even though the Centennial has passed! Ever wondered which islands within Frenchman Bay are a part of Acadia National Park? Join us aboard the Schoodic Ferry at 12:30 p.m. as we explore the history of how and when islands within Frenchman Bay came to join this national treasure, and what the preservation of those habitats has meant for the Frenchman Bay ecosystem. Join us as we celebrate the treasure that is Acadia National Park!
July 4th Fireworks in Bar Harbor CruiseBook Online!
Join the Schoodic Ferry Tuesday, July 4th for a special sunset cruise to see the fireworks in Bar Harbor! Keep an eye out for seals, harbor porpoise, bald eagles, and if we are lucky, perhaps even a minke whale on this special cruise. Deviating from our normal route, the Schoodic Ferry will pass slowly by Mark Island Light, offering beautiful photo opportunities on the way to Bar Harbor. Weather permitting, we will also pass slowly by Egg Rock Island, offering the chance to see Egg Rock Lighthouse and our resident population of harbor and gray seals. Once we arrive in Bar Harbor, the Schoodic Ferry will moor outside the town pier so you can have a front row view of the fireworks – without having to worry about traffic or parking. Because this is not a regular ferry run, the Schoodic Ferry will leave from and return to the Schoodic Marine Center; we will not land in Bar Harbor. Estimated return to Winter Harbor after the conclusion of the fireworks is 11:00 p.m. Because it is a special occasion, feel free to BYOB and coolers – and get ready to have a fun and relaxing July 4th fireworks cruise! $32.00/person or $27.00/person for Maine residents. No pets please, as fireworks are often a frightening experience for furry friends.
Winter Harbor Lobster Boat Races Cruise
Join the Schoodic Ferry Saturday, August 12th for a front row seat to the Winter Harbor Lobster Boat Races! The Schoodic Ferry will put you front and center for one of downeast Maine’s most exciting events of the summer – lobster boat races! Lobster boats from all over the state come to compete to see whose boat is the fastest, racing from the Winter Harbor entrance buoys down the middle of the Bay to Frazier Point. It just doesn’t look or sound the same from shore. Depending upon weather conditions, the Schoodic Ferry may moor just outside the course or slowly cruise around so that you can have a front row view the races – without having to worry about the 100+ other boats also cruising around. Because this is not a regular ferry run, the Schoodic Ferry will leave from and return to the Schoodic Marine Center; we will not land in Bar Harbor. Estimated return to Winter Harbor after the last race is 11:30 a.m.. Because it is a special occasion, feel free to BYOB and coolers – and get ready to have a fun! $32.00/person or $27.00/person for Maine residents. No pets please, as backfiring lobster boats are often not a pleasant experience for our furry friends.
For folks visiting Bar Harbor, consider taking our 7:50 a.m. ferry ride across the Bay, then hopping aboard for your front row seat!
Sunset Evenings Trips**
Ready to experience the nightlife in Bar Harbor or Winter Harbor– without worrying about driving home? Join the Schoodic Ferry Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays July 1 – August 31 for our late night runs. In Bar Harbor, considering catching the early show at Reel Pizza or Improv Acadia, or checking out a live show at the Criterion Theatre or many local restaurants. In Winter Harbor, see what the Schoodic Arts for All Festival has to offer, eat a romantic dinner overlooking the water at the SaltBox or Fisherman’s Galley, or simply enjoy the romantic quiet of a picnic dinner by the crashing surf – with no one else in sight. Watch the sunset over the water as you cruise back to your port of origin. This is often the time of day when the water is at its calmest, and all the wildlife comes to the surface, so keep your eyes open during your end of day adventure.
The Schoodic Ferry welcomes passengers, their bicycles, and their leashed pets aboard. While we do charge for passengers, bicycles and leashed pets ride free! Customers planning to bring bicycles on the Schoodic Ferry should reserve space for each bicycle, as bicycle capacity is slightly less than passenger capacity.
Proof of residency is required to purchase Maine Resident tickets. Maine driver’s licenses, utilities bills, tax bills, and current pay stubs from Maine-based companies that match an individual’s government-issued photo ID (ex. driver’s license or passport) are all acceptable.
